The Database Engineer manages all aspects of databases in the enterprise. Responsibilities includes but are not limited to maintainingSLAuptime for all production-critical databases, management of disaster recovery databases and processes, troubleshooting performance issues, and executing production changes, including conversion of new assets onto the platform, with minimal disruption to the existing environment.  The database administrator is responsible for recommending and executing upgrade paths for production databases.

No supervisory responsibilities, however the person must be willing to serve as mentor on subject matter expertise to other member of the team, as well as willing to learn different technologies as needed.

Responsibilities of the SQL DBA:

  • Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business’s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • Test backups to ensure we can meet the business’ Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
  • Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends
  • Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms
  • Respond to SQL Server alerts, remediate and communicate any issues
  • Database Architecture
  • Install and configure new SQL Server databases
  • Participate in the annual DR testing
  • Deploy database change scripts provided by internal employees & third party vendors
  • When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes
  • Document the company’s database environment
  • Capacity Planning

  • Work as part of the team to create DB. Standards and procedures
  • Participate on an on call rotation as needed
  • Database related project work as required; this often involves attending frequent conference calls

Requirements of the SQL DBA:

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science/engineering
  • 3 to 5 years of on-call troubleshooting experience
  • Knowledge of SSIS (SQL Server’s ETL tool)
  • Finding Dynamic Management Views queries to answer questions about server-level performance
  • Use of tools to diagnose server reliability and performance issues
  • 3 to 5 years of experience Tuning T-SQL queries to improve performance
  • Microsoft Certification is a plus
  • Familiar with SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2014 is a plus
  • Must have demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills as well as good corporate etiquette
  • Needs to be a technical, detail-oriented individual, able to query and analyze large/complex sets of data who understands the system development lifecycle process

  • Excellent troubleshooting, capacity planning and performance tuning skills

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and work under stress
  • Must be a team player
